I’ve been traveling alone so many times and during those times, I made friends, I found comfort, I found solitude, I fell in and out of love. But most of the time, I just take pictures and eat.

Traveling alone is not precisely easy, especially if you had to leave someone you love for days, weeks, months. Sometimes, I get lonely at night. The constant thought of wishing that I could share the adventure with someone whom I’m in a relationship with. To places we’ve never been, far from luxury and get lost together in map and translation for at least once a year.

But sadly, I’m not so lucky.

Hopefully one day there would be someone who’d walk with me in every journey, holding our cold pint of beer at a shack by the beach, top hat off after a long day of walking, fighting at the intersection whether to take left or right or just go straight, get awed by the same clear sky at night with starscape above.

One day.

Never thought that this would came to me but… relationship is not as simple like I used to think. There are things in life that we liked it or not, connected to relationship life;

Friends and family.

Back then, I was the type of person who doesn’t really care about my partner’s friends and family simply because I believed everybody needs their own space despite they are in a relationship. So, I never let them close to my family, I don’t even talk about my relationships with my family.

I was also the type of person who would look at my friend in disgust when they say they want to introduce their partner to their family when they are not in a serious, commited relationship like… getting married? I’ve been wondering why couples do that. Cos that sure sounds like trouble.

But as I grew older, I’ve came to my conclusion that basically it creates a sense of security. Acknowledgement, approval… everything leads to ‘security’. And security is our warm blanket that makes us sleep well at night. We want our partner to be accepted in our circle, friends and family and of course, likewise. In other word, sharing our living environments. Ourselves, our friends and our family is actually like salad in a big bowl that eventually will be tossed and mixed around.

I remember back then when my ex brought me to his house and meet his parents, I freaked out. The thought alone was repulsive, I wanna get the hell out of there fast. It’s not that I didn’t respect his family, but man, for the young me, it was pure terror.

Second time was with my another ex. Even though we were together only briefly, but he was actually the very first one who made me feel the experience of getting acknowledged, embraced and accepted within his world and the people he loves.

I was a part of his life.

He brought me to his workplace, I talked with his funny boss and colleague, made home party with his best friends, he talked about me to his mom, sister and family about how much he loved me.

“Hey, I told my mom I got a girlfriend and since I can’t contain the feeling, I blurted ‘I MISS HER SO MUCH’!”

Sure it sounds corny but it was very sweet. He opens up his world for me and let me explore what’s inside of him, and that’s one of the reason I liked him as a person.

He was genuine.

And for the first time in my life, I was set perfectly. Sure we broke up at the end for one reason to another, and we don’t love each other anymore, but the feeling was real. I felt sad that I probably couldn’t talk to his friends like I used to, and I felt bad to his friends and I wanted to apologize to his mom even though we never met before.

You see, when you accept someone in your life and they accept you, you begun to love the people your partner cherish. Friends. Family. Pets. And it’s only usual that you want your partner to love the people you love.

Took me quite some time, but I finally understand one of the meanings of relationship.
